This COVID-19 Thing

So, I want to talk about this COVID-19 thing. As if enough people aren’t. Well, here are my thoughts.

This is bad (I know, we all know). But, it’s really bad. I think that the effects of this pandemic will surpass what any of would have imagined and what any of us will ever know. People are going to be effected indirectly and we will see the effects for decades to come. Here are 2 things I can’t stop thinking about:

The overall population.

My generation has already been known for having less kids. In fact, not even having enough kids to replace the current population. Now, the population is seriously declining. This could be a blessing and a curse for the human race.

For one, the earth was already becoming over populated. So maybe this is a good thing. Additionally, many of the people who are dying are elderly. This is the population that has been living so long that they are draining social and other government programs faster than we are replenishing them.

On the other hand, people are dying. That in itself is bad. Also, it isn’t that middle-aged and young people are immune. Right now it seems that we can use all the lives we can get.

Non-COVID-19 Illnesses on the Rise

Like I said, I don’t think we know how bad this is. It is clear that social isolation is taking a major toll on people’s mental health, but what about other areas of health. I think of my friend who has frequent headaches and went to the doctor to learn he has Leukemia. If the outbreak was a few months earlier, he may not have gone to the doctors because headaches are not an “emergency” or because he was scared of exposing himself to this virus. How many people are putting off going to the doctor right now that unknowingly have an illness that can be terminal if not treated on time?

And what about addiction? Drug and alcohol use must be ramped. For those who use drugs, they may have nothing else to do. I even have heard that some people don’t want to send their loved ones to treatment because they are worried about them contracting the virus.

How backwards is that?

Also, pregnancy! Birthing women aren’t being allowed to have more than 1 person with them? And can they not share their little bunch of joy with the world? Imagine your family can’t meet your child for months following its birth.

Final note: This is a crazy time to be alive and we all need to realize that.
